Mob Rules are a German power metal band. They were founded in 1994 by erstwhile Van Blanc guitarist Matthias Mineur and bassist Thorsten Plorin. Pulling in vocalist Klaus Dirks and drummer Arved Mannott, the quartet began to gig. Opening slots included shows with Pink Cream 69, . During the Spring of 1996 Mob Rules added second guitarist Oliver Fuhlhage and a self-financed mini album prompted a deal with Limb Music Productions for the March 1999 Savage Land

Mob Rules, from the start, were a band looking to play fairly standard-issue (though quite nuanced) power metal of the Germanic strain, and while they did a respectable job from the outset, their debut album doesn’t quite have all the parts lined up to fire on all cylinders. What the band does have here is a youthful energy that allows a lot of these tracks to burst forth with enthusiasm. There are no outright speed metal numbers, but a good portion of this album is spent in the uptempo realm. Savage Land represents a young band biting off a bit more than they can chew. They had the ability to make short, punchy power metal songs work, but they spend so much of the album throwing curveballs and moving beyond those basics that flawless execution is a rarity here. Still, Mob Rules' energy and ambition are nice, and nothing on here is unlistenable-it’s just that sitting through the whole thing becomes a bit of a chore. I’d recommend this album to those who like adventurous power metal and aren’t super hung up on arrangement and melodic precision like I am. Best debut CD a melodic.
