Blind Boy Fuller's 1940 recording of "Step It Up and Go" sold over half a million copies. tradition, often having "studied" under some of the old Piedmont masters. The Piedmont style of guitar playing has also influenced other popular musicians such as Doc Watson, Paul Simon, Nick Drake, Ralph McTell, and Mark Knopfler. Arlo Guthrie famously used a Piedmont blues backing for his "Alice's Restaurant" monologues, as it was easy to play repeatedly for long stretches.
Blind Boy Fuller (born Fulton Allen) was an American blues guitarist and vocalist. Fuller was born in July 10, 1907 in Wadesboro, North Carolina and died February 13, 1941 in Durham, North Carolina. He played a steel National resonator guitar. As a boy Fuller learned to play the guitar and also learned from older singers the field hollers, country rags, and traditional songs and blues popular in poor, rural areas. It is reported that around 1926 he suffered from ulcerated eyes and became partially blind. His vision continued to deteriorate until 1928, when he was completely blind.

North Carolina blues legend Blind Boy Fuller made his debut in 1935 recording in New York City for the American Record Corporation. Along with his guitar mentor, Rev. Gary Davis, and washboard player Bull City Red, Fuller ended up cutting 12 songs during that first trip, which established him as a vital new voice in the Piedmont Blues tradition. With his gritty voice and percussively picked National steel guitar, he covered multiple styles including ragtime, gospel, traditional blues, and hokum, eventually recording over 120 songs during his brief career.
