The Banana Man was a vaudeville character created by Adolf Proper (November 27, 1886–December 17, 1950) who worked under the stage name "A. Robins". The Banana Man (BZ) act consisted of Proper, dressed as a clownish character in a baggy tuxedo, producing an amazing and apparently impossible number of props from countless pockets and secret places in his costume. He would then perform various clown routines with the props.

The Knack recorded this song, along with "Banana Man", in Los Angeles on May 22, 1967 with producer Nik Venet and engineer John Krauss. If anyone knows where in . this was recorded, I'd really appreciate knowing. Barbara and I were high school sweethearts. She was a great gal then and she still is today. The Knack were formed in 1965 at by students at Hollywood High School led by Michael Chain. The original name for the band was the InMates. Their original line-up consisted Mike Chain on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, Dink Kaplan on lead guitar, and Larry Gould on bass and backing vocals, and Ken Meyers on drums. After traveling on a Shindig road show, the band changed their name to the Knack. Later in 1967 the band released their third single, "Pretty Daisy" b/w "Banana Ma. "Pretty Daisy" has a trumpet part played by a session man. Eventually Dink Kaplan would leave, replaced by Bobby Cochran on lead guitar.
