His use of tenuto in the opening movement that causes minor pauses in the momentum of the musical waves. This frustrated some critics that like a metronomic pathway through the music and stamped Stokowski's personality on the performance. The way he rolled the timpani through the famous pregnat pause at the fourth movement's coda, where hundreds of conductors have been unsure what to do with this empty spot in Tchaikovsky's score. Stoki's way here, while contrived, also seems perfectly natural.

The Symphony No. 64 by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was composed between May and August 1888 and was first performed in St Petersburg at the Mariinsky Theatre on November 17 of that year with Tchaikovsky conducting. It is dedicated to Theodor Avé-Lallemant. In the first ten years after graduating from the Saint Petersburg Conservatory in 1865 Tchaikovsky completed three symphonies.
