Frank Zappa - The Grand Wazoo CD (1986, Rykodisc RCD 10026) Original Japan. But I knew only one album of Zappa and The Mothers at that time and now with the information power over the net finally I read a lot of news and stories about how unique Frank Zappa as person is (and probably "has been"). That's enough to draw a conclusion that he's definitely prog. Musically this album is at par excellent with "Hot Rats".

Like its immediate predecessor, Waka/Jawaka, The Grand Wazoo was a largely instrumental jazz rock album recorded during Frank Zappa's convalescence from injuries sustained after being pushed off a concert stage. While Zappa contributes some guitar solos and occasional vocals, the focus is more on his skills as a composer and arranger. Most of the five selections supposedly form a musical representation of a story told in the liner notes about two warring musical factions, but the bottom line is that, overall, the compositions here are more memorably melodic and consistently engaging than.

Frank Zappa didn't invent the word "wazoo" or proliferate its usage. However, he was the first to use it in an album and song title that, surprisingly, had no accompanying lly censorable lyrics. The aural quality of the album possesses a life-affirming spirit, while the intermittent blurps, bleeps and "inside" soap opera buffoonery-once salient features amidst often brilliant instrumental interludes on earlier albums.

The Grand Wazoo, Zappa’s May 1973 LP, affirms this divine status. Less than a year prior, Waka/Jawaka took Zappa’s song writing capabilities to a larger scale. His progressions were polished a smidgen, his directions became clearer, and he and his band put together an excellent recording. Over 20 musicians and vocalists contributed to the recording of this album, which proves to energise the music itself, which isn’t dissimilar to that of the previous record. The contributing artist list reads more like a jazz chamber orchestra, rather than a tight rock band line up. The crisp production, and the grand scale of the recording sessions are obvious, and as a result, The Grand Wazoo just sounds delightful. The strength of the album lays mostly on the shoulders of the instrumental composition.

The Grand Wazoo' (1972). Following a brief post-Mothers period of regrouping his musical ideas, Zappa swerved into the world of fusion for a handful of albums. 8. 'Waka, Jawaka' (1972). Supposedly developed as the soundtrack to a science-fiction movie Zappa and the Mothers were putting together, the record messes around with overdubs, tape manipulation and ever freak outs like no other album in Zappa's vast catalog.
