Album The Shouting Stage. The Shouting Stage Lyrics. I thought we had it sweet But your mind's played A trick on me I thought that I'd be with you All the time And I'd be fine Yeah I'd be fine. I'll swear you have my feelings Under thought control I know you've taken Such a hold on me I'm thinking more and more Of what we had before. Before we lost it At the shouting stage Before the days we'd sit there Side by side Without a word And how that hurt. How could eternal love Made above We were so in love We were joined.

The Key is the eighth studio album by the British singer-songwriter Joan Armatrading, released on 28 February 1983 by A&M Records (AMLX64912). The album was recorded at Townhouse Studios in Shepherd's Bush, London; Polar Studios in Stockholm and also in New York. The album spawned the single "Drop the Pilot", which became one of Armatrading's biggest hits, reaching number 11 in the UK Singles Chart over a 10-week stay.
The good news is that, after several albums of flirting with rock and overproduction, Joan Armatrading has developed a spare sound once again focusing on her songs and singing, backed by such tasteful accompanists as Dire Straits members Mark Knopfler and Alan Clark. The not-so-good news is that, lyrically, Armatrading seems trapped in a romantic cul-de-sac - when she doesn't have the object of her affections, she longs for him, but when she does have him, she argues with him and suspects him of infidelity, not to mention emotional abuse
Another Electric Album by Joan, The Shouting Stage is Joan Armatrading being funky and features another super tight band. The writing and music on this July 1988 release can best be described as lyrical and has a distinctive dance music sound. In fact, it has a very catchy jazz/r&b flavor throughout. But, don't let that description be off-putting by any reading. This album is beautifully done. Thankfully we never lost it at the shouting stage and I'm glad we found a stronger love that has endured. The playing by mark knopler and pino palladino as well as Joan's essential funkiness buoys this album up and even all these years later I continue to float away listening to this one. Highly recommended along with "Lovers Speak".
