Alkaline Trio's song "Calling All Skeletons, from album "Agony & Irony".

Agony& Irony is the sixth studio album from American rock band Alkaline Trio.

Agony & Irony is the sixth studio album by American rock band Alkaline Trio, released July 1, 2008. On October 12, 2006, the band announced they had signed with major label V2 Records. In addition, it was mentioned that the band was working on new songs, and was aiming to record a new album in early 2007. However, in January 2007, V2 went through a restructuring process which left the fate of its acts unknown. On July 31, the group announced they had signed to another major label, Epic Records.

Alkaline Trio's 2008 album Agony & Irony. Alkaline Trio have been playing their unique brand of hardcore Punk music to legions of fans for over ten years. With Matt Skiba on guitar and vocals, Derek Grant on drums and Dan Adriano on bass, the band emerged from the working class suburbs of Chicago,Illinois in 1997. The Trio released their first two albums with indie label Asian Man Records and then joined Vagrant Records in 2001.

Since the release of their 1998 album "Goddamnit", Alkaline Trio has been a consistent source of catchy punk music. With lead guitarist Matt Skiba and bass player Dan Andriano providing some of the darkest and most heartfelt lyrics in the genre, they hooked many people (including me) into their addicting, aggressive records. It comes as no surprise that a vast majority of their growing fan base were disgruntled by their signing onto the major record label, Epic. There were immediate cries of selling-out, which is no shock. And thus came "Agony & Irony", the sixth studio creation from the Trio as well as the most radio friendly display of dark pop-punk to come from the group. In terms of their past efforts, this could easily be seen as on par with "Crimson", which was viewed as one of their more somber records. With A&I the group returns with the same morbid outlook, but with a more polished and poppy execution.

Agony and Irony is different than any previous album released by Alkaline Trio, but is clearly done for artistic reasons. Yes, this does move a bit closer to pop punk than most would like, but it is still far from what would be called "mainstream". Alkaline Trio has evolved into something new with this album. Many will like it, many wont. Some have said it's their best, others their worst.

Alkaline Trio released their fifth studio album on Vagrant Records, titled Crimson, on May 24, 2005, which featured the single "Time to Waste. The single for this song also included bonus tracks produced by Squirtgun and Common Rider bassist Mass Giorgini. The tracks "Mercy Me" and "Burn" have also been released as singles from the album. On December 1 Alkaline Trio confirmed to Rock Sound that the title of their new album would be This Addiction: "It is the first song on the record and the title of our new album," said vocalist Matt Skiba. The song takes heroin addiction as a metaphor for love. The whole record is really personal, all three of us have been through quite a bit since our last album and it is all expressed through this, all the songs are about the relationships we've been in and so the record has a constant theme.
