The other strand of dramatic tradition was classical aesthetic theory. This theory was derived ultimately from Aristotle; in Renaissance England, however, the theory was better known through its Roman interpreters and practitioners. At the universities, plays were staged in a more academic form as Roman closet dramas. Shakespeare's earliest plays tended to be adaptations of other playwrights' works and employed blank verse and little variation in rhythm.

Shakespeare’s dramatic genius was at its highest in the second period of his literary work, when all of his famous tragedies appeared. In the plays of this period the dramatist reaches his full maturity. He presents great human problems. Society could achieve progress and happiness only through struggle. He had faith in man’s virtue. In Shakespeare’s tragedies the evil forces are victorious only to a certain point, in the end the good wins. Nature occupies an important place in Shakespeare’s works. His own attitude to it changes as the author himself changes. In the early comedies his heroes find happiness and peace of mind in nature, in the tragedies nature turns against them, and in the romantic dramas one feels that man can conquer nature.
The play was possibly a collaboration between Shakespeare and Christopher Marlowe, another Elizabethan dramatist who is best known for his tragedy "Doctor Faustus. Shakespeare's last play is believed to be "The Two Noble Kinsmen," a tragicomedy co-written with John Fletcher in 1613, three years before Shakespeare's death.
