Epicureanism: Epicureanism, in a strict sense, the philosophy taught by Epicurus (341–270 BCE). In a broad sense, it is a system of ethics embracing every conception or form of life that can be traced to the principles of his philosophy
Epicureans shunned politics because it could lead to frustrations and ambitions which can directly conflict with the epicurean pursuit for peace of mind and virtues. After the death of Epicurus, his school was headed by Hermarchus; later many Epicurean societies flourished in the Late Hellenistic era and during the Roman era (such as those in Antiochia, Alexandria, Rhodes, and Ercolano). In Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy, the Epicureans are depicted as heretics suffering in the sixth circle of hell. In fact, Epicurus appears to represent the ultimate heresy.

The Epicureans were materialists in the modern, scientific sense. They accepted the physics of Democritus that the universe was composed entirely of empty space filled with atoms of differing shapes and weights that moved in non-linear paths (swerving) smashing together and latching into greater structures, composing the universe. Pain and suffering were bad, happiness and fulfillment were good. It’s a certain medieval christian bias that led to the interpretation of Epicureanism as the pursuit of sensual pleasure. The Epicureans understood that sensual pleasure was fleeting, and would quickly move over into its opposite if chased too vehemently. What is important is the Greek term Eudaimonia, which is often translated as happiness, but has little to do today with what we call happiness (the bubbly, pleasurable sensation that accompanies agreeable outcomes and events).
Some modern sociologists claim that religion was developed by primitive people for reasons other than god-worship. Fear of death may have led to elaborate stories of the afterlife. Confusion about mankind's inability to control nature fostered the belief that devoted adoration of a deity would bring favor. And governmental agencies would have found it easier to maintain control of the population with the fear of a god behind their civil laws
