Bedřich Smetana (Czech pronunciation: (listen); 2 March 1824 – 12 May 1884) was a Czech composer who pioneered the development of a musical style that became closely identified with his country's aspirations to independent statehood. He has been regarded in his homeland as the father of Czech music.

While it is often presented as a single work in six movements and – with the exception of Vltava – is almost always recorded that way, the six pieces were conceived as individual works

I only quite recently gotten into classical music and bought this album on a binge a few months ago with a lot of other classical music. I bought it mostly because of The Moldau. It music is stunning, beautiful but also dramatic, powerful, dynamic and full of life.

From an early stage of his career he had received support from Franz Liszt, who found him a publisher for some early piano pieces. Smetana had just begun work on the first of the tone poems that make up Má Vlast before the deafness set in. He completed that first piece and wrote all of the remaining five, in the first months of his deafness. Vltava (The Moldau) has always been far and away the most popular movement of the cycle. It vividly imagines actual sites along the river, and we can hardly be surprised to learn that Smetana had visited these places long before and that the visits may have inspired the idea for the work.
