The rejection of Russell's Corn album (a suite of hip-hop-infused electropop including material later released on Calling Out of Context) by Socolov in 1985, coupled with creative disagreements between the two over "Wax the Van", resulted in Russell divesting himself from Sleeping Bag Records shortly after the release of e" in 1986. Shortly after the release of World of Echo, Russell was diagnosed as HIV-positive.

The music ebbs and flows, snippets of melody occasionally bursts through the murky mix, but is otherwise buried in the dubs and echoes that abound challenging to listen to. While I admire .

At first listen, World of Echo sounds like meaningless dreck that barely wakes up to complete a melody or enunciate a single verse of poetry. And Arthur Russell's legacy has never been richer for it. This year's mass rediscovery and mythologization of the late Russell- an Iowan who seemed to be swinging on a tire over the Mississippi, even when in downtown Manhattan- was remarkable. Russell's various projects- including Dinosaur L, Indian Ocean, and Loose Joints- got feted as textbook examples of "mutant disco.

we need a repressing of this as soon as possible! copies are so hard to come by.
Style: "Soft Rock"? ? ? ? ? / ? !
no surface noises on my copy :)its vinyl , not mp3
So much better/quieter than the newest pressing (at least the copy that I had).
Anybody here that knows if this (first) repress has similiar issues (quiet, noisy pressing) than the 2011 & 2014 issues? Thanks!
I just listened to me copy and the same whoosh is there. :/
Unfortunately noise is a problem with this pressing. Rhythmic scratches throughout.
Despite the negatives comments below, this repress sounds really fine to me. My copie hasn't any "surface noise". Sometimes I'm wondering if this kind of comment are coming from original copie's owners who just want to keep safe their little privileges...
I don't have the original copy. This repress is nicely mastered and sounds good, but sadly as most vinyl reissues today the pressing quality is hit and miss. My copy is affected by surface noise on side A and B and disc 1 is slightly warped. The problem is they put the vinyls in cheap paper sleeves and they suffer damage before even being played. I guess as vinyl collectors we are tired of paying over and over again for poor quality reissues and original pressings are becoming more expensive every day. It feels amazing when you get a copy that is well mastered and pressed, but that's not always the case nowadays. Glad your copy was fine !
Disappointed with this extremely meager reissue of one of the more interesting albums of the last 30 years. No special inner sleeves, no insert, no liner notes regarding the only proper album he released during his lifetime. Sound is mostly fine with some surface noise throughout. Glad I received this as a gift because $30+ is excessive for such a bare bones package.
I have to agree that the packaging leaves something to be desired. My copy sounds fine, however I've purchased Audika LPs in the past that were riddled with awful surface noise, so I don't think it would be fair to simply blame the equipment.
i have no issues with this pressing. it sounds quite nice. Maybe my player and needle is of a higher caliber than yours? like a North Face jacket instead of one bought at Target.
Lots of surface noise on my copy of this repress.
I have the same issue. Specially on side B, pretty much throughout and this was a sealed copy
Sorry to hear that. My copy is whisper quiet.
quiet pressing
My comment is directed not towards the music of World of Echo, which is quite beautiful, but towards the DVD portion. Like many others who were anxiously awaiting this reissue, I looked forward to actually viewing an Arthur Russell performance. The DVD was quite a let down. Two minimalist performance pieces filmed by Phil Niblock are included on it. They are, unfortunately, excruciatingly boring. I wanted to feel the intimacy that I felt was trying to be conveyed, but the poor film quality and hand-held shaky movements were too much of a distraction. The lengthy and slow close-ups of Russell's stubble, lips, nose and chin that comprise the first piece left me unaffected. Occasionally, Niblock lets the camera linger on the cello's body. Russell's movement with the bow is quite interesting, unfortunately you have to sit through a lot of grainy, slow moving stubble action before those moments arrive. Given its limited numbers and previous unavailability, collectors of Russell's work will surely snap these up. However, if you're only after the music, then I would bypass the mixed media version and pick up the audio recording only.
