A companion volume to "Calypso at Midnight", featuring a transcription of a radio performance from 1946. While some of Alan Lomax's recordings function best as museum pieces, these performances are great fun. Lord Invader, Duke of Iron and Macbeth are on hand with their orchestras.

Calypso is the third studio album by recording artist Harry Belafonte, released by RCA Victor (LPM-1248) in 1956. The album became his second consecutive number-one album on the Billboard Top Pop Albums chart, where it peaked for 31 weeks. Calypso is well-known as the first LP record album to sell over one million copies and is considered by many critics to be one of the greatest albums of all time.

But after midnight, the musicians are warmed up and rambunctious and I swear they forget sometimes that they are on stage in front of an audience of hundreds of Americans. They completely revert to spontaneous Trinidadian wit and rhythm. The concert takes place only months after the war ended so Duke of Iron does one of the last performances of the night, a heart warming tribute to FDR's visit to Trinidad. The praise for Roosevelt in this song is a fitting act of friendly diplomacy for the cultural exchange this concert represents. It was an exciting, hilarious and, for many, enriching event for sure.
