A Giant Dog. Austin, Texas. A Giant Dog is raucous ear candy culled from the hook-driven melodies of Slade, the glammy swagger of Marc Bolan, the morbid fantasy of Killer-era Alice Cooper, and the unpredictable wit of Sparks. These songs are by, for, and about the losers, freaks, and outcasts. The terminally horny. Boozehounds and party animals.

A Giant Dog were formed in 2008 and hail from Austin, Texas. Sabrina Ellis, Andrew Cashen and Orville Neeley all previously played together during their high school years in Houston. They latterly recruited Andy Bauer (2) and Graham Lowe to become a five piece.

We were a bit star struck by Cheryl Waters. Additionally, we’d been touring ceaselessly for a year, so if Sabrina’s face looks strained, if you notice tears welling up, voice cracking, and an unhinged expression it’s because she wasn’t taking care of her mental health. Now, we are opening some shows for Against Me, who are amazing.

They made an impression on fellow Austinite and Spoon frontman Britt Daniel,.

The fourth album from Austin, T. s A Giant Dog fuses the gaudy delivery of 1970s rock and the pillars of modern punk. Its songs offer lyrics about sex without typical depictions of love. With an updated cover of Sparks’ Angst in My Pants or a line in Bendover like "I'm not a lover/I am a fight," A Giant Dog aim to dismantle the misogyny of rock’n’roll sex tropes. They reclaim S&M as a way to embrace the vulnerability that comes with power transferral, even if the lyrics could scan as reworked idioms dressed in makeup thanks to Ellis’ voice. There’s an earnesty to her brand of camp, and that juxtaposition turns her into a kind of Iggy Pop figure. It’d be unfair to say A Giant Dog prioritize lyrics above all else. Musically, Toy is their most experimental.
