Talking Heads were an American new wave band who, between 1975 and 1991, recorded 96 songs, 12 of which were not officially released until after their break-up.

Most of the kudos for the album focus on the energetic African-influenced tracks that start the album – Born Under Punches (The Heat Goes On), Crosseyed and Painless and of course the spasmodic hit Once in a Lifetime. The mastery in these tracks is in the way that all these small snippets of recordings have been brought in together to form songs. There are so many layers in these songs that you keep discovering new things about them after many repeated listenings.

The Talking Heads never made another album that sounded quite like it; the fact that they were soon able to surpass it is what makes them great instead of good. New Feeling (Reinventions): Speaking in Tongues may be the first record from Talking Heads to truly deviate from its predecessor. Everything up to that point had seemed like the next logical step, whereas this record feels like the band intentionally veer off the path laid in front of them. Heaven (Best Song): The one thing Talking Heads: 77 lacks is a sense of urgency, and Thank You for Sending Me an Angel delivers that in spades with an aggressive charm that freely descends into spastic, wonderful disarray.

Talking Heads started out in the mid 70s New York punk scene, playing CBGBs alongside The Ramones, Television, Patti Smith, Blondie et al. Psycho Killer was released in 1977 and was apparently the first song David Byrne ever wrote – not a bad start. It’s written from the point of view of a serial killer, it has a middle eight sung in french, and it’s got a killer bassline from Tina Weymouth. This is from their second album, More Songs About Buildings And Food, which was the first album they did with Brian Eno. I think most of the album came from them jamming in their rehearsal room, which is how we worked out a lot of our album. Eno set them up to record it there because that’s where they were most comfortable, which was counter to everything that was happening in the late 70s, like big expensive studios – but you don’t need to be in an expensive studio to come up with good sounds and good ideas.

Talking Heads: 77 (Sept 1977, Sire), is Talking Heads' debut album. The single "Psycho Killer" made it to No. 92 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. In 2003, the album was ranked No. 290 on Rolling Stone magazine's The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list. In his 1995 book, The Alternative Music Almanac, Alan Cross placed it in the No. 5 spot on his 10 Classic Alternative Albums list.
