Quiet Signs is a meager helping of Jessica Pratt's pretty and subtly psychedelic style of folk songwriting.

For her third album Quiet Signs, Jessica Pratt offers up nine spare, beautiful & mysterious songs that feel like the culmination of her work to date. Fare Thee Well" and "Poly Blue" retain glimmers of On Your Own Love Again's hazy day spells, but delicate arrangements for piano, flute, organ and strings instill a lush, chamber pop vim. The record's B-side, meanwhile, glows with an arresting late-night clarity; the first single, "This Time Around," pairs the Los Angeles artist's intimate vulnerability with a newfound resolve

Jessica Pratt spins fantasy worlds bound to bewitch, dreamscapes that spiral towards the surreal, psychedelic spirituals that nourish. Her music’s intimacy feels so organically abstract, it is as if the songs are distilled directly from her subconscious. But as her third record, Quiet Signs, reveals, any perceived effortlessness is an illusion. While Pratt’s toolbox remains minimal-her trusty fingerpicked guitar and elastic voice alongside a sprinkling of keys and woodwinds-she weaves these means more intricately than ever, with a firm and confident hand

Over and over again, Pratt hovers on the brink of revelation, yet Quiet Signs puts down a code, that, brilliantly, it's not quite possible to break. 80. Pratt’s voice is still gorgeously muffled and her words remain indecipherable at times.

Jessica Pratt possesses a rare ability to slow down time. Her textured voice is among the strangest and most compelling in our contemporary music landscape and her songs are built on small observations that speak to bigger themes and resolutions that are just out of reach. Pratt’s lyrics are like free-associative bits of poetry, strung together by uncanny melodies that sound like something you’ve heard before but can’t quite place

Album · 2019 · 9 Songs. The third album from the LA-based master of timeless acoustic folk is an exercise in restraint. Yet despite its minimalism, there's emotional heft: While her 2015 album On Your Own Love Again followed the passing of her mother, the end of a relationship, and her upheaval from San Francisco to LA, these songs deal with her putting off a return to San Francisco after falling in love with musician Matthew McDermott (who plays piano on the opener here). The nine songs are compact and rooted in Pratt's voice, evoking 1960s French yé-yé singers or Nico, as the chamber pop of short numbers.

A lot of emotion can come out of a little record, whether the music is heavy on instrumentation or a soft collection of songs is accompanied by an elegant, powerful, and dynamic voice, one that, say, echoes a time in the past when folk music can sound spacey and magnificent like you were about to walk into an enchanted kingdom or universe like. In the case of the latter, Los Angeles-based folk singer-songwriter Jessica Pratt’s vocals evoke the tenderness of Nico, contemplation and delivery of Nick Drake, and a high-pitched voice that sounds like she’s from a far-away land at times (not that it’s a problem holding the record, or any previous release down; it does know make her.

Superb record, no matter the length. My white vinyl copy sounds great!
Not a great pressing but not horrible; light surface noise and I had pops on A2. Cleaned with an Audio Desk Systeme Pro
What a gem of album, the crystal clear record looks and sound astonishing - totally dynamic, quiet and rich. It's like savoring honey but to the ears.
This is an absolutely beautiful album. My first copy of this clear vinyl pressing had some intrusively loud crackles and pops, so I sent it back for a replacement. That copy is very clean and sounds excellent. There are great copies of this pressing out there, so if you do pick up a dud - be sure to replace it, as they're not all like that.
The Apotheoses of Lacspor
Jessica Pratt's strongest work to date. Unfortunately far too short IMO to be considered an album... charging fans $20 for a 27minute long, 9 song (really 8 songs not counting the intro) record is pretty crazy. My guess is she wasn't ready to put out a new record but after 4 years was under a lot of pressure and rushed a bit to put this out. Also my copy of this white vinyl wasn't great and pretty noisy for a mint record. Also, am I the only one who thinks the cover art on this record and the last is so weak? They look like photos from a pitchfork interview or something, not like album covers. Especially odd considering the music is so embedded in 60s/70s aesthetics. maybe shes throwing a photographer friend a bone.
hmm yeah I read something where she just said she appreciates brevity... I don't really buy it, what's she supposed to say when fans ask why she released such a short album. I mean the first track is a pretty intro but it's the same melody as the second, so you're really just left with 8 songs... seems a little lazy to me, more of an EP really. still appreciate it but probably could've done without dropping $20 on it.
She recently said that she'd rather put out a shorter album of strong material than 'fill out' the running time, which is fair enough. I agree with you that this isn't reflected in the RRP, although what you do get is utterly spellbinding.
As I've seen from other reviews here, I can also vouch for the crisp, quiet recording! White vinyl looks and sounds clean. Would have loved a gatefold similar to her last record, although it's nice to see an equally great package put together with less materials this time around!
Perfect. Flat, Quiet, Dynamic. And Jessica's album is perfect too.
The City Slang clear vinyl is excellent. Flat, quiet and beautiful sounding.
How's the pressing quality on the white wax? Man, I'm hoping this thing is DEAD QUIET considering the music.
contrary to others here, my copy is sadly not great. only just started but pretty noisy on the first track... quiets down a bit afterwards but pretty disappointing for a mint record :(
My copy is surprisingly quiet as well. I was concerned, 'cause I've had problems with Mexican Summer's pressings in the past.
Awesome! This is incredibly helpful. Thank you for your review!
My copy is very quiet. Solid pressing and amazing record; her best of the 3 so far, in my opinion.
