Four graphical scores are interpreted by a group consisting of Lingens on accordion, Koen Nutters and Derek Shirley on double basses, Johnny Chang on viola, and Michael Thieke on clarinet. However, what I gather from listening and from reading the thoughts of those more knowledgeable than I is that a relaxing of this attitude is becoming more and more audible

Felix Mendelssohn wrote four pieces for string quartet that were published together as his Opus 81 after his death. They have at times wrongly been presented as a single work, even as his String Quartet No. 7 : Tema con variazioni (Andante sostenuto) in E Major, Op. 81/1, written in 1847; Scherzo (Allegro leggiero) in A Minor, Op. 81/2, also from 1847; Capriccio (Andante con moto) in E Minor, Op. 81/3, from 1843; and the earlier. Fugue (A tempo ordinario) in E-flat Major, Op. 81/4, written in 1827.

Hannes Lingens: Pieces For Percussion (Umlaut Records). Compositions for percussion from Berlin drummer and accordionist Hannes Lingens (Musaeum Clausum, Antoine Beuger, Lucio Capece, &c), composed over six years, each using a restricted set of materials, instrument or instrument type, Lingens performing solo, and as a duo and quartet using overdubs, using microphone techniques for detail and ambiance. Mark Dresser Seven (Nicole Mitchell, Ehlrlich, GoGwilt, Dessen, White, Black, McLagan) Ain't Nothing But A Cyber Coup & You (Clean Feed) The 2nd album for East/West Coast double bassist and composer Mark Dresser's Seven band, in a diverse set of lyrically intricate Dresser compositions using unusual and compelling rhythmic structures, with Nicole Mitchell on flute, Marty Ehrlich on clarinets & sax

Percussionist and accordionist Hannes Lingens lives and works in Berlin. To perform his composition Four Pieces for Quintet, his accordion is joined by four of Berlin’s finest-the double basses of Koen Nutters and Derek Shirley, the violin of Johnny Chang and the clarinet of Michael Thieke. Straight away, there is a benefit to the new format, as the folded A3 sheet in the card sleeve includes the graphic scores for the four pieces. To hear the album, you have to use the download code printed on the poster. Nice compromise between the tyranny of the digital file and the attachment to the physical object. Now, about the music: four five-minute pieces for quintet (viola, clarinet, two doublebasses, and Lingens’ acordion), consisting of sustained notes of a duration and pitch determined by the score.
