Time Out is a studio album by the American jazz group the Dave Brubeck Quartet, released in 1959 on Columbia Records. Recorded at Columbia's 30th Street Studio in New York City, it is based upon the use of time signatures that were unusual for jazz such as 98, 64 and 54. The album is a subtle blend of cool and West Coast jazz. It peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard pop albums chart, and has been certified platinum by the RIAA.

Dave Brubeck's Time Out is a jazz recording for people who have had trouble getting into jazz music. And by that, I don't mean that it's watered down easy listening for pop lovers. What I mean is that it's the perfect gateway to the challenging world of improvisation and song structures found in works by Brubeck, Miles Davis, John Coltrane and countless others. While works by hard bop musicians like Davis and avant-garde masters like Coltrane are considered the pinnacle of jazz music, they can be very challenging for listeners not accustomed to the genre.

Originally laid down in 1959 by the Dave Brubeck Quartet, which is not to be confused with any of the other Dave Brubeck incarnations, including Dave on piano, Eugene Wright on bass, Joe Morellos on drums and Paul Desmond holding down the alto sax. The record is also known as Time Further Out: Miro’ Reflections, another in a series of continuing jazz experiments inspired by paintings by abstract artists. In this case it was the very visual and kinetic work by Miro’, created in 1925, and featured a descending string of numbers in the right hand corner.

Time Out is another recording I play to remind myself how music should sound through my system. Brubeck’s quartet recorded many great albums for Columbia, including Jazz: Red Hot and Cool (1955) and Time Further Out (1961).

On the album Time Out, Brubeck used a different time signature for each track, which was very unusual. In Brubeck's interview with Zollo, he said: "The album came out but the sales people, they have formulas that are unwritten laws about what's going to work, what's going to sell. And my album couldn't have worked because it's all originals. They said you should never put out all originals, you have to put in some standards and some show tunes. Well, they were wrong It reached (for 3 weeks) on Billboard's Adult Contemporary Tracks chart. Mr. Brubeck (1920 - 2012).

Time Out is a 1959 album by The Dave Brubeck Quartet, based upon the use of time signatures that were unusual for jazz (mainly waltz or double-waltz time, but also 9/8, and most famously 5/4).
