About Astral Rejection by I Set My Friends On Fire. ISMFOF's second full-length expands their musical palette on this follow-up to their 2007 debut, You Can't Spell Slaughter Without Laughter to create a unique album that teems chaotic moments, brutal breakdowns, electronica interludes and melodic choruses
After an eerie intro, album opener ‘It Comes Naturally’ starts ‘Astral Rejection’ as it means to go on – with complete and utter insane brutality. Frontman Matt Mehana screams his way through the first verse like a lunatic before switching to a melodic pop-punk vocal style at the chorus. At this point on the album, I Set My Friends on Fire may remind of fellow Floridian metalcore band A Day To Remember, although the synth-pop technique that they frequently employ occasionally reeks with the scent of Owl City
The album opens with "It Comes Naturally". Compared to the rest of the album, this song is the most related to the original ISMFOF sound. Very attacking guitars with a mellow and melodic chorus seems to sum it up quite easily and safely. It is a very approachable and catchy song, and it can easily take the spot as one of the best songs on the album. It's regrettable, as it definitely leaves you wanting more of the same likability, cheeriness, and hardcore-like sounds found in the album opener of all things.
