This 58-minute CD was recorded from 2005-2007; Peacock was in his early seventies, and Copland was in his late fifties. Instead, Insight sounds like the work of two musical friends getting together in the studio and having a mutually agreeable post-bop dialogue
The pairing of Peacock and Copland is not exactly new; Peacock played on Copland's 1998 Savoy date, Softly, albeit in more traditional trio, quartet and quintet settings. By paring things down to the barest essentials, they have created a recording of quiet beauty; dark and mysterious, this is chamber jazz at its best. Most telling are the two separate versions of Peacock's piece "Vignette. The album closes with the second reading, this time a solo rendition from Copland, where the harmonies are less direct, more abstruse. Another Peacock piece, "Requiem," bears comparison to the version on the Marilyn Crispell trio recording from 2001, Amaryllis, as it so succinctly defines the difference between the two pianists. Crispell comes at the piece from a slightly more jagged, avant edge; Copland from a more romantic impressionistic point of view.
Marc Copland (born May 27, 1948, as Marc Cohen) is an American jazz pianist and composer. Copland became part of the jazz scene in Philadelphia in the early 1960s as a saxophonist, and later moved to New York City, where he experimented with electric alto saxophone. In the early 1970s, while pursuing his own harmonic concept, he grew dissatisfied with what he felt were inherent limitations in the saxophone and moved to the . area, where he remained for a decade to retrain as a jazz pianist. The album featured almost all Copland originals. Three years later, Swiss producer Werner Uehlinger followed. In Poetic Motion, references to Bill Zavatsky's poem of the same title are everywhere (Hatology). 2004 What It Says with Gary Peacock (Sketch). 2004 Both/And with Randy Brecker (Nagel-Heyer).

This is Marc Copland, the former Chico Hamilton pianist, in quiet and rded chamber-jazz conversations on 12 originals with bassist Gary Peacock. Peacock's crisply decisive phrasing, rounded yet penetrative sound and rhythmic leadership are very well captured.
