The Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra (German: ter Stuttgart des SWR) was a German radio orchestra based in Stuttgart in Germany. The ensemble was founded in 1945 by American occupation authorities as the orchestra for Radio Stuttgart, under the name Sinfonieorchester von Radio Stuttgart (Symphony Orchestra of Radio Stuttgart)
The Stuttgart Symphony Orchestra does not attempt to swing and the charts often lean more toward Western classical music (and the type of music one might expect from a soundtrack) than jazz. This out-of-print LP is of greater interest from a historical standpoint than it is musically.

This CD is comprised of two important LPs by John Lewis, the 1958 recording, Two Windows and the earlier set, The Modern Jazz Society Presents a Concert of Contemporary Music. John Lewis first gained recognition as a pianist and arranger for Dizzy Gillespie's band in the forties. Later, he wrote and performed with some of the most important musicians of the period including Miles Davis and his "Birth of the Cool" band.
Since its formation the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra has concentrated on two thematic focal points. On the one hand, with its exemplary interpretations it fosters the great classic and romantic repertoire of the symphonic tradition; on the other, the RSO is also a leading promoter of contemporary music. In its early years, the newly-founded broadcasting station started up special series of concerts devoted to the promotion of contemporary music.
