Victor Light Opera Company productions are little appreciated today. Lyrics are nearly impossible to understand when sung by an ensemble singing into a recording horn, especially when tempos are brisk (Victor did print lyrics for in its monthly supplements). Nonetheless, they were influential, inspiring other companies to organize similar groups. In 1910 Columbia followed Victor's example by forming the Columbia Light Opera Company, which made its recording debut on July 26, 1910, with selections from The Mikado, issued on A5229 in November. 1" was issued on wax Amberol 795 as performed by the similarly-named Edison Light Opera Company ("Pinafore Airs-No. 2" was issued on Amberol 820 in November 1911, followed in successive months by "No. 3" and "No. 4".

One two-sided platter I heard recently (I don't yet own this cd but they are included on it) has Gems from the early Jerome Kern musical, VERY GOOD EDDIE, which introduced the later classic hit, "Babes in the Wood", and a now obscure operetta, SYBIL, by the equally unknown trio of writers, Graham, Jacobi and Smith, the pleasantly so-so tunes.
Pinafore; or, The Lass That Loved a Sailor is a comic opera in two acts, with music by Arthur Sullivan and a libretto by W. S. Gilbert. It opened at the Opera Comique in London, on 25 May 1878 and ran for 571 performances, which was the second-longest run of any musical theatre piece up to that time. Pinafore was Gilbert and Sullivan's fourth operatic collaboration and their first international sensation.
