Out of the album's nine tracks, three are James Brown covers ("Super Bad," "I Got You," and "King Heroin"), which would surely bring a smile to the Godfather of Soul's face. And although the whole band wails throughout, bassist Colin Wade proves to be outstanding, playing some of the most fluid and funky basslines ever committed to tape. Highlights are many, but tops would have to be "Sax Maniac," "White Cannibal," and "Hell on Earth.

It was released in 1979 through ZE Records. All About Jazz critic Trevor MacLaren wrote: "Through the anger and aggression Chance made a solid record that had a sound like nothing before or since," describing the album as "a great disc that sounds as original and cutting edge as when it was released

"James Chance & The Contortions – "Melt Yourself Down"". ROIR released its first cassette, by James Chance and the Contortions, in 1981. In 1982, ROIR released the compilation album New York Thrash, documenting the hardcore punk scene in the New York metropolitan area. It has since become a definitive album in the genre. Most of ROIR's early catalog consists of punk rock and no wave releases by artists such as Suicide, Glenn Branca, and Lydia Lunch. The label later branched out into other genres including hardcore punk, reggae, ska, psychedelia and dub.
