This 2002 release by The Future Sound of London is excellent, albeit very different from previous albums. This is a good thing by the way; this outfit is very creative and I am glad to see them "mixing things up". Speaking of mixing things up, the duo that comprises the core of The Future Sound of London has been very active in a side project called Amorphous Androgynous. The Isness could be considered an album by Amorphous Androgynous. Speaking of which, the music on The Isness reminds me a lot of the album Celestial Ocean (Brainticket, 1973), with the exception that Brainticket used more in the way of avant-garde styles. In spite of the references to earlier genres however, The Isness still sounds fresh. Although subtle aspects of earlier Future Sound of London albums poke though here and there, the overall sound is very different.

The Isness takes the strange sounds of Lifeforms and combines them with 70’s era Progressive Rock and mellow Psychdelia to create one of the more original albums I’ve heard in awhile.
