Features Song Lyrics for Millie Jackson's Still Caught Up album.

Caught Up is a concept album. The concept, however, wasn't the "state of the universe", as was then fashionable. No, it was the everyday concept of a love triangle. Jackson tells us how it is to be the mistress, how it is to be the wife, how it is to know a relationship is over, how desire waxes and wanes as domesticity takes over, how to leave a lover. We used to play this album in my friend Val's bedroom, which was the coolest room I had ever seen as it was painted in black and purple stripes. Alongside Jackson we played Sly Stone and Rahsaan Roland Kirk. I don't think Ciccone Youth were up his street and when I played Millie Jackson he listed some older soul singers I needed to listen to. I am well aware of the history of funk and absolute filth that proceeded Jackson, but men always do need to try and "educate" women about music. They never stop trying.

Taking the drama of a love triangle to logical extremes, Millie Jackson's Caught Up turns the pitfalls of tainted love into the basis for a concept album (the seeds for soul music's explicit treatment of the topic having been planted by James Carr's "Dark End of the Street"). While the "other woman's" view is taken up initially on cuts like the R&B hit "If Loving You Is Wrong I Don't Want to Be Right," the wife's plight is covered on the second half of the disc with revealing titles like "It's All Over but the Shouting.

Caught Up is the fourth album by R&B musician Millie Jackson. It includes the hit singles, "(If Loving You Is Wrong) I Don't Want to Be Right", "The Rap" and "I'm Through Trying to Prove My Love to Yo. A concept album, Caught Up follows the story of a woman having an affair with a married man. Side A features Jackson singing from the mistress' point of view and Side B is told from the wife's point of view.

While the other woman’s view is taken up initially on cuts like the R&B hit If Loving You Is Wrong I Don’t Want to Be Right the wife’s plight is covered on the second half of the disc with revealing titles like It’s All Over But the Shouting. I found strange that at the time of release, Millie Jackson was considered to be singer who is hiding her vocal limitations with rap, when to my ears her robust, gritty, passionate voice sounds like one of the best voices I ever heard (combination of Gladys Knight and Tina Turner).

Mildred Virginia Jackson (born July 15, 1944), known professionally as Millie Jackson, is an American R&B and Soul singer-songwriter and former model. Beginning her career in the early 1960s, six of Jackson's albums have been certified gold by the RIAA for over 500,000 copies. Jackson vocal performances are often distinguished by long, humorous, and explicit spoken sections in her music, which she started doing on stage to get the attention of the audience.

The suite of compositions that comprise Caught Up unfolds with Millie’s epic interpretation of Luther Ingram’s 1972 hit ‘If Loving You Is Wrong I Don’t Want To Be Right’. You can now listen again to this landmark concept album as Millie Jackson intended – on vinyl.
