Violent Femmes is the debut album by Violent Femmes. Mostly recorded in July 1982, the album was released by Slash Records on vinyl and on cassette in April 13, 1983, and on CD in 1987 with two extra tracks "Ugly" and "Gimme the Car".
Violent Femmes were founded in 1980 by mentalist Brian Ritchie and drummer Victor De Lorenzo. The name is a contradiction in terms, Violent being self-explanatory and Femmes being Milwaukee slang for wimp. The rhythm section added high school singer/songwriter Gordon Gano in 1981. Gano and Ritchie had previously performed together at Gano’s National Honor Society induction ceremony, where they caused a near riot. Gano was expelled from the Society and suspended from high school for this outrage. One of the only stable aspects of the band is their aversion to rehearsal. A somewhat severe muscle cramp in Violent Femmes release of new recordings seems to have been worked out, with the new Archive Series heralding a welcome period of much-needed, high-quality documentation of a road adventure that in at least some details recalls the demented social activism of both the Spike Jones and Sun Ra outfits, although neither of these great artists. Here they are in Iceland, a mythological place to begin such a series of archive recordings for sure.
Genre: Alternative Rock.
