Fans who have followed Ages and Ages through Divisionary and their first album, Alright You Restless, will pick up on a few sonic evolutions. Synth sounds complement the expected keys on tracks such as Something to Ruin and Kick Me Out, both of which also feature chugging, almost proggy electric guitar breakdowns that cast a slightly darker specter. Something to Ruin in particular closes with a grandiose flourish, featuring a spectacular flute part lilting above the choral harmonies

Ages and Ages performed at the South by Southwest (SXSW) music festival in Austin in March 2011. In August 2016, Ages and Ages released their third record Something to Ruin on Partisan Records. The album was recorded at Isaac Brock's, Ice Cream Party Studios with the Modest Mouse front-man adding guitar to the track "So Hazy". The first single "They Want More" premiered on the June 7, 2016 episode of the NPR Podcast All Songs Considered. Ages and Age's emphasis on featuring electronic and synthetic sounds makes Something to Ruin sonic departure from their previous albums.

Ages and Ages face a similar challenge on Something to Ruin, an album set against a backdrop of corporatization, gentrification, and exploding real estate prices in their base of Portland. The gravity is even captured on cover art that shows elephants roaming the streets of a city in dystopian ruin

Ages and Ages discuss the making of their new record Something to Ruin and debut a new video for "They Want More". On this album, the instruments were recorded first and then the vocals were added without using headphones. We just pumped up the instruments through the monitors and sang through the microphone so that would pick up the original recording of the instrumentation. I think we just wanted to reflect the actual experience of playing this music, that it was a very raw, sort of in the moment thing. Music in a lot of ways is about a moment, or just, you had to be there, like a joke that isn’t funny unless you were there a lot of times.
