ric Alfred Leslie Satie (French: ; 17 May 1866 – 1 July 1925), who signed his name Erik Satie after 1884, was a French composer and pianist. Satie was an influential artist in the late 19th- and early 20th-century Parisian avant-garde. His work was a precursor to later artistic movements such as minimalism, repetitive music, and the Theatre of the Absurd.

The unconventional French composer Erik Satie almost wrote anti-music. In slow motion (and without bars) his well-known Gymnopédies glide past. In other pieces one can hear more than faint echoes form the vaudeville theatre.

More than other composers, Erik Satie seems to invite outrageous interpretations. This has a lot to do with his own iconoclastic personality, and it's hard to escape the conclusion that he would have enjoyed the fact that his music served as a stimulus to further creative activity. Nonetheless, his music isn't especially well suited to outlandish treatments - anything added to it tends to be at cross purposes with what's already there

Les Six" (pronounced ) is a name given to a group of six French composers who worked in Montparnasse. The name, inspired by Mily Balakirev's The Five, originates in critic Henri Collet's 1920 article "Les cinq Russes, les six Français et M. Satie" (Comœdia, 16 January 1920). Their music is often seen as a reaction against the musical style of Richard Wagner and the impressionist music of Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel.
