Jazz is a 2001 television documentary miniseries, directed by Ken Burns. It was broadcast on PBS in 2001, and was released on DVD and VHS on January 2, 2001 by the same company. Its chronological and thematic episodes provided a history of jazz, emphasizing innovative composers and musicians and American history. Swing musicians Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington are the central figures.
This volume illustrates Herbie Hancock's metamorphosis from one of acoustic hard bop's finest composers to a pioneer of electric jazz-rock fusion, and finally into his brief yet popular flirtation with electro (the breakdance music that was techno's immediate forerunner). Serving in Miles Davis' legendary '60s quintet would have made Hancock a major figure in hard bop regardless, but his own albums for Blue Note were consistently impressive as well.

The Definitive Herbie Hancock has the distinction of being the only CD in the Ken Burns 22-CD artist series dedicated to a musician who emerged after 1960. Herbie's abilities are apparent from the outset in "Watermelon Man", an infectious Latin soul groove featuring bop tenor great Dexter Gordon that's set deep in the Blue Note ethos of the early 1960s. This album has to be one of my all time favourites. It has everything I feel a jazz album needs and more besides. The smooth sound of tracks such as "Sleep like a Child" and "Tell me a Bedtime Story" contrast brilliantly with the meaty bass line of "Chameleon". And not only are the tracks themselves good, but surely everyone must delight in the skillful musical manipulation shown in this album. 4 people found this helpful.
