Richard Wagner's works for the stage, representing more than 50 years of creative life, comprise his 13 completed operas and a similar number of failed or abandoned projects. His first effort, begun when he was 13, was a prose drama, Leubald, but thereafter all his works were conceived as some form of musical drama.

The growing number of serious compositions for wind ensemble, and the large number of institutionalized ensembles to play them, are in large part due to the efforts of Frederick Fennell. Though his career took him to the orchestral podiums of Cleveland, Boston, Miami, and elsewhere, it is his notoriety as a conductor of music for winds, his prolific recorded output, and his role as the founder of the Eastman Wind Ensemble that perhaps most strongly denote his career. Fennell was born in Cleveland in 1914. During his years there he transformed concert band into a multifaceted musical wind ensemble that could tap into the large body of long overlooked wind and brass concert music, and establishing a unique tradition and sonority for which new works could be created.

Wind is a German musical group that mostly plays schlager music. The band is still active, more than 20 years after its foundation. The group was started in 1985 by the composer Hanne Haller. The members of the band at that time were Alexander "Ala" Heiler, Christiane von Kutschenbach, Rainer Höglmeier, Willie Jakob, Sami Kalifa and Petra Scheeser. The group has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest for Germany three times

Sir Adrian Boult: From Bach to Wagner. Save for his cycle of Brahms symphonies and a couple of LPs-worth of Wagner bleeding chunks, his presence on US record shelves was confined primarily to the music of RVW, Elgar, Holst and other Brits. So it's very nice that EMI (now Warner) has seen fit to release an entire 11-CD box of his German repertoire (the box cover proclaims "from Bach to Wagner," even though Wolf's short "Italian Serenade" is included as well). Boult's Mozart and Beethoven is also big band, which is alright with me. He draws a fine singing quality from the orchestra in these recordings which are damned for today's audiences by their extreme competence and excellent balances. Such things are - sadly - no longer admired in our thrill-a-second entertainment environment.
