The Odean Pope Saxophone Choir, led by tenor saxophonist and composer/arranger Odean Pope, consists of nine saxophonists plus a rhythm section and occasional guest saxophonists, heard over the course of several nights at the Blue Note. The powerful, straight-ahead "Epitome" introduces the reeds alone at first, with the leader's moving solo being unaccompanied and the rhythm section finally added near its conclusion

John Matouk did a write-up of Odean Pope's 'Locked & Loaded,' which is in the current issue of aboutjazz. Guest saxophone players included Michael Brecker, James Carter and Joe Lovano I'm all "ears.

Locked & Loaded: Live at the Blue Note. Odean Pope has been a mainstay on the Philadelphia jazz scene for decades. He served a brilliant apprenticeship with Max Roach and has been putting out superb recordings under his own name for well over twenty years. I believe this session of the choir was recorded in 1990. I say "I believe" because Soul Note has seen fit to reissue the session with no liner notes or session info whatsoever. I have tried to reconstruct who played on this session as best I can but the following info may be wrong. In 2006, Half Note released a live recording of The Saxophone Choir with many of the same personnel. Odean Pope also appears on many CIMP CDs. If you don't know that label, check out their web site.

Tenor saxophonist Odean Pope's third post-bop Saxophone Choir outing was released on the Soul Note label in 1994. Epitome includes a saxophone section of three altos, five tenors, and one baritone, Eddie Green and Dave Burrell splitting piano duties with Tyrone Brown on bass, and Craig McIver on drums. This is not an avant-garde big-band assembly, even though there are moments ("Coltrane Time") that certainly fit that description.
