The Complete 1957 Riverside Recordings is a 2006 release of Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane's work for the Riverside Records label in 1957, with two tracks previously unreleased. This collection is an almost complete anthology of the work of Monk and Coltrane, who only recorded together in the studio during 1957. The set draws from tracks recorded for Thelonious Monk with John Coltrane, Monk's Music and a trio track from Thelonious Himself.

Coltrane acknowledged Monk’s strong influence on him in a 1960 Downbeat interview quoted in those original liner notes. So while this deluxe, imaginatively packaged 3 LP set, the first from Craft Recordings-a new label from Concord Bicycle Music-does stretch to fill three records with a false start of Monk’s Mood, multiple takes of Crepuscule with Nellie (five in all) and even one track on which Monk famously doesn’t play, these are the only studio recordings Monk made. with Coltrane during the period where Coltrane bloomed.

The two compact discs in this set contain all the music created by Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane, between April and July of 1957 when they worked together in the recording studio. Only one professional and one amateur set of live recordings are also known to exist. Other than those live recordings, this is all that has been preserved of one of the most memorable and important collaborations in jazz history.

Concord’s new reissue label Craft Recordings will next month issue their first release, The Complete 1957 Riverside Recordings, a three-LP vinyl box set that celebrates the only studio recordings of Jazz masters Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane. The musicians had performed together every night at New York’s Five Spot Cafe of that same year and between April and July they made their only studio recordings together.
