Lard Free is French psychedelic minimalism band, formed around drummer and keyboards player Gilbert Artman. He was the only constant member of the band on their few next albums. Music on their debut album is perfectly composed angular rhythm structures-based synth/rhythm compositions with free-jazz sax improvs over them. All this mix sounds heavy, spacey, psychedelic, minimalistic - and excellent. I am not sure if this music could be labelled as "krautrock", or let say - it's a French krautrock.

Again with a new line-up, a third album simply called LARD FREE was presented hot on the heels of Urban Sax's debut. This, the final document of Lard Free, was arguably an even bolder, more radical and original album than either earlier offering, being very rock oriented, aggressive and powerful, swamped with electronics and effects

Lard Free was an avant-garde band from France, formed by Gilbert Hartman in 1970. Stylistically the band combined electronic music, space rock, jazz and RIO (Rock In Opposition). The name is a pun on the French "L'Art Free" ("The Free Art"). Hartman worked with a variety of other musicians on the three albums released under the Lard Free name: Lard Free (1973), I'm Around About Midnight (1975), and III (AKA Spirale Malax, 1977).

The first album by Gilbert Artman's Lard Free is the band's most conventional record, with six relatively concise songs (more than would appear on the next two albums combined) dominated by Phillippe Bolliet's saxophone and Francois Mativet's Robert Fripp-like guitar work.

According to a March 2009 interview with Jourgensen, he and Biafra are working on a new Lard album, which was to be recorded in Jourgensen's El Paso studio. However, according to a January 2010 interview with Jello Biafra, he indicated that a new Lard album was unlikely, saying "Me and Al have talked about it for years, but we’ve never. been able to nail down a time to try and put it together Discography. THE SPIRAL TURNSApart from his grandiose plans for Urban Sax, there were still many new ideas on the Lard Free front. Again with a new line-up, a third album simply called LARD FREE was presented hot on the heels of Urban Sax's debut. This, the final document of Lard Free, was arguably an even bolder, more radical and original album than either earlier offering, being very rock oriented, aggressive and powerful, swamped with electronics and effects. Featuring strangely processed clarinet, and a guitarist who had certainly studied Robert Fripp's more dissonant styles, backed up by thunderous drums and with a most strange spiralling production style. Featured are two side-long suites: Spirale Malax is aptly the most cyclical and systemic in nature, churning over itself in increasing intensity - a psychedelic Heldon tripped-out in an echo-chamber maybe? Synthetic Seasons, contrastingly, conforms a touch more to conventional music formulas, in that it opens spaciously, gradually taking shape, forming structures out of the electronic haze. Later, after the addition of drums and extremely processed guitar, the music builds up to a desperate frenzy. Here the clarinet is used to most unnerving and eerie effect during a lull before the final apocalyptic season breaks out like a strange hybrid of instrumental King Crimson and Magma. From my Gilbert Artman "The Eternal Spiral" article in Audion magazine #24 (Feb. 1993)
