China Crisis - Difficult Shapes & Passive Rhythms - Some People Think It's Fun To Entertain download album

Another fine Gary Daly/Eddie Lundon composition from their first album 'Difficult Shapes and Passive Rhythms' (1982). Difficult Shapes & Passive Rhythms, Some People Think It's Fun to Entertain.

China Crisis ‎- Difficult Shapes & Passive Rhythms - Some People Think It's Fun To Entertain Genre: Electronic, Rock Style: Art Rock, Synth-pop Year: 1982.

Difficult Shapes is a great debut album from the sadly-defunct China Crisis. The main Steely Dan connection here (to me) is the vocals. Beyond that, CC are definitely their own band. There is less polish and more uptempo tracks than on a typical SD album. The lyrical content does not approach the cryptic nature of SD. Anyway, I guess I'd regard this as something of a synthpop album, but it also contains nice jazzy undertones. It is highly melodic and pleasantly uplifting. Imagine Depeche Mode but with more propulsive rhythms, and brighter, with no drugs or clinical depression

China Crisis contributed a cover of Carole King's "It's Too Late", with both a regular version and an extended remix. In March 2017, China Crisis performed as part of the 80's Invasion Tour that included Toyah, Paul Young and Martika. In July 2017, the band returned to the Philippines for a show at the Kia Theatre, alongside Peter Coyle of The Lotus Eaters.

Liverpool-born China Crisis has always been an interesting band. They take a low key organic band approach and meld it with electro/synth content. The difference with most bands who take this approach, though, is the energ. r lack of it. That’s not being derogatory in any way but synth-based bands from the 80s tended to use synths to make a noise, to provide punchy beats and, frankly, to show off their toys. The kids in the audience had no idea how to dance to it: some looked lost, others were mesmerised and swayed a lot. There are more upbeat tracks on this album, of course, but even they have a tender jazz funk element to their presentation that demands that hips shimmy rather than shake. Now remastered from the original tapes and including new interviews, the sets contains bonus tracks, BBC Sessions as well as demos.
