My Ladye Nevells Booke is a collection of 42 keyboard pieces by the greatest English composer of his day, William Byrd. It includes dances, variations, contrapuntal fancies and battle pieces, and was compiled seemingly from the composer's for Lady Nevell, half-sister to Frances Bacon and third wife of Sir Henry Nevell of Billingbere, who was her second husband. The volume, dated 1591 and handsomely bound was acquired by the British Library in 2006. It constitutes a significant monument to Byrd's achievement as a composer for the virginals.
My Ladye Nevells Booke is a collection of 42 keyboard pieces by William Byrd presented to the titular noblewoman who may have been a student of the composer. The music was for the most part already extant, but Byrd was involved in its selection and compilation, and it is in many ways a fascinating overview of his thinking about the keyboard. The album was recorded in a hall in the small town of Manchester, near Hill's studio, and the ambiance is superb; small details of both playing and instrumental timbre clearly emerge. This will be an important acquisition for libraries, keyboardists, and English music enthusiasts. Track Listing - Disc 1.

William Byrd (1540 or late 1539 –1623) was one of the most celebrated English composers in the Renaissance. He lived until well into the seventeenth century without writing music in the new Baroque fashion, but his superbly constructed keyboard works marked the beginning of the Baroque organ and harpsichord style. My Ladye Nevells Booke: No. 26, A voluntarie, for my ladye nevell.
