Symphony No. 10 by Gustav Mahler was written in the summer of 1910, and was his final composition. At the time of Mahler's death the composition was substantially complete in the form of a continuous draft, but not fully elaborated or orchestrated, and thus not performable. Only the first movement is regarded as reasonably complete and performable as Mahler intended.
DAVID ZINMAN concludes his acclaimed Mahler symphony cycle with the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich and the release of Symphony No. 10. Zinman describes the Tenth Symphony as the "saddest chapter" in this great, ten-part symphonic novel in which Mahler bids his wife Alma farewell, speaks of his disillusionment with life, and looks into the future of music. Zinman employs the lesser-known Clinton A. Carpenter version of this famously unfinished work as it "contains more of that specific Mahler sound.

David Zinman and the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich have received extraordinary praise for their polished recordings of Gustav Mahler's symphonies, and kudos will surely greet the appearance of the Symphony No. 8 in E flat major, the most ambitious work of the cycle and the greatest challenge to a conductor's ability to marshal several ensembles into one immense entity. Fortunately, this performance sounds warm and intimate in the sparest sections and heaven-storming at the fullest, all without seeming to be artificially manipulated at the mixing board. Zinman, the nine vocalists, the four choirs, and the orchestra deliver this majestic symphony with exceptional enthusiasm and concentrated energy, so the music never bogs down in sluggish tempos or becomes muddy in tone.
Instead David Zinman has chosen (not without some reservations he voices in the booklet) the more speculative completion by Clinton Carpenter. It is very well suited to the warm, ample textures of his Zurich orchestra who play with total commitment; but heard just after listening to Mahler's ninth, it sounds far too lush and lavish, too filled out where Cooke, and the even sparser Joe Wheeler version on Naxos, remain spare and taut. But for Mahlerians it's a fascinating comparison, superbly played.
