Caetano Veloso is the debut solo album by the artist of the same name, released in Brazil in 1968. He had released Domingo the year before in collaboration with Gal Costa.

Caetano Veloso (born 7 August 1942) is one of the most popular and influential Brazilian composers and singers. Caetano Veloso (born 7 August 1942) is one of the most popular and influential Brazilian composers and singers. He was born in Santo Amaro da Purificação, Bahia, Brasil, the fifth of the seven children born to José Telles Veloso ("Seu Zezinho") and Claudionor Vianna Telles Veloso ("Dona Canô").

In Caetano Veloso ’s 2003 memoir Tropical Truth: A Story of Music & Revolution in Brazil, he is adamant that the date is a lie: The coup actually took place on April Fool’s Day. Four years into the new regime, Brazilian pop singer Veloso recorded his first solo album.

Caetano Veloso's first album as a solo artist marked the birth of the culturally revolutionary tropicalia movement, of which Veloso and Gilberto Gil were the leading figures. The concept of the movement was to modernize Brazilian popular culture and, through creative music and poetry, reflect the Brazilian society as it appeared at the time. Veloso and other tropicalistas mixed traditional Brazilian popular music primarily with international pop culture and psychedelic rock, but they would incorporate practically anything that crossed their minds

Caetano Veloso's first album as a solo artist marked the birth of the culturally revolutionary tropicalia movement, of which Veloso and Gilberto Gil were the leading figures. Veloso and other tropicalistas mixed traditional Brazilian popular music primarily with international pop culture and psychedelic rock, but they would incorporate practically anything that crossed their minds. After the hugely successful release of the psychedelic pop poem "Alegria, Alegria" as a single in 1967, Veloso aimed at releasing an album that would surpass the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's in terms of creativity, while at the same time reflecting the new, more international, Brazil.

Caetano Veloso" is an album released in Brazil in 1968 by the artist of the same name, being one of the first Tropicália efforts. It has arrangements by Júlio Medaglia, Damiano Cozzella, and Sandino Hohagen, and it is very eclectic, showing the "Antropofagia" (artistic cannibalism) aspect of the Tropicália movement, varying from Psychedelia, rock, Pop, Indian Music, bossa nova, Bahian music and others.

Considered among the first Tropicália records, Caetano Veloso’s self-titled solo debut ranks as one of the genre’s most influential touchtones. In addition to giving the nascent movement its name, the opening Tropicália best demonstrates Veloso’s playful mix of Brazil’s local musical traditions and the more aggressive sounds of contemporary rock ’n’ roll. Elsewhere, Clarice has the melodic warmth and seductive qualities of a psychedelic love song. The album also features one of Veloso’s best-known hits, Alegria, Alegria.
