Gaia is a 2003 album by Spanish folk metal band Mägo de Oz. It is the first rock opera of a trilogy. The album tells of a woman, the reincarnation of Azzak (or Gaia), who after his execution, is relieved of his soul: the soul of Azzak.

The album cover shows Lema, a youthful 72, bare-chested à la Fela. But it’s pure coincidence. I was changing clothes and the photographer took that shot. It was the one he preferred. So I said why not! Nonetheless, the semi-nudity seems appropriate on an album where he reveals something essential about himself: a musician who defends social justice and freedom to go where your emotions take you. Congo Rhapsody. Lema was born in Bas-Congo, in the west of DRC, and returned home only in 2011 after a three-decade absence.

Lema first became involved in music playing church organ for five years. By the time he entered college, he was already playing keyboard in Kinshasa clubs for artists like Kalle, Abeti, M'pongo Love, and Tabu Ley. He worked with the Ballet du Zaire and from 1974 to 1978 toured the country studying folklore. He won a Rockefeller grant for study in the . Lema's grounding in folklore and choreography, as well as music, helped him break through in the '80s and maintain a reputation as a soukous musician not content to be pigeonholed in that style.
