African Guitar Summit. The Juno Award is Canada's version of the Grammy Award. I've been intrigued by this unique style of guitar playing since I saw one of these guys play in the Fender booth at NAMM years ago.

African Guitar Summit was a project created in 2004 under the guidance of a Canadian CBC radio station that invited several Canadian-based African-born musicians to do a series of collective recordings and performances. All nine performers were selected based on their personal interpretations of guitar music of their respective native countries, which included Guinea, Rwanda, Ghana, Kenya, and Madagascar. The material for African Guitar Summit was conceived and recorded in just three days, and the newly formed project followed through with a number of well-received performances.

African Guitar Summit is a group of nine Canadian musicians, all of African origin who perform traditional songs from their native countries. The African Guitar Summit was organized in Toronto as part of a performance project for CBC Radio's On Stage program. Musicians were, from Guinea, guitarist Alpha Yaya Diallo and on balafon Naby Camara. From Ghana, guitarist Pa Joe, singer Theo Yaw Boakye, and drummer Kofi Ackah took part.

Having already been enchanted by the continent's music, this recording seemed as sure a bet as anything. While the band's name is a bit of an exaggeration, the title lives up to some of the hype. This project consists of Canadian musicians who've come from various countries such as Ghana, Kenya and Madagascar.

Their debut CD African Guitar Summit was honoured with a Juno as the World Music Album of the Year at the 2005 Juno Awards. Their second album, "African Guitar Summit II", garnered a 2007 Juno award nomination in the same category.
