François Couperin (French: ; 10 November 1668 – 11 September 1733) was a French Baroque composer, organist and harpsichordist. He was known as Couperin le Grand ("Couperin the Great") to distinguish him from other members of the musically talented Couperin family. Couperin was born into one of the best known musical families of Europe.
Couperin: Pieces De Clavecin. Couperin: Pièces De Clavecin. This album contains the 5th and 7th Suites, each prefaced by one of the 8 Preludes. Wonderful music making on a magnificently recorded authentic instrument. There are several complete recordings of Couperin's work nowadays; but I frankly wonder who would ever have the time to get to know all these miniatures intimately by repeated playing. Moreover (without beating about the bush) there is in these couple of hundred pieces a colossal amount of formula, repeated ad infinitum with slight variations
Leonhardt concludes this Couperin family album with three richly textured pieces by Armand - Louis, contrasting cheerful forthrightness in L'intrepide, with its analogue the rondeau that follows - and concluding with the cheeky Arlequine. All in all, quite a revelation, reaffirming Leonhardt's place at the heart of the early - music performance movement. Louis Couperin (c. 1626-1661). Pièces de clavecin - Livre III: Quinzième ordre 17. La régente ou la Minerve 18. Le dodo ou l'Amour au berceau 19.

François Couperin was known as "Couperin le Grand" (Couperin the Great) to distinguish him from the other members of the musically talented Couperin family. Couperin was born in Paris. He was taught by his father, Charles Couperin, who died when François was 10, and by Jacques Thomelin. In 1685 he became the organist at the church of Saint-Gervais, Paris, a post he inherited from his father and that he would pass on to his cousin, Nicolas Couperin. As the early-music expert Jordi Savall has pointed out, Couperin was the "poet musician par excellence.
