The Austrian composer Arnold Schoenberg published four string quartets, distributed over his lifetime: String Quartet No. 1 in D minor, Op. 7 (1905), String Quartet No. 2 in F♯ minor, Op. 10 (1908), String Quartet No. 3, Op. 30 (1927), and the String Quartet No. 4, Op. 37 (1936). In addition to these, he wrote several other works for string quartet which were not published. The most notable was his early String Quartet in D major (1897)

Reinhold Moritzevich Glière (Russian: Рейнгольд Морицевич Глиэр, Ukrainian: Ре́йнгольд Мо́ріцевич Гліер, Reingol'd Moritsevich Glier; born Reinhold Ernest Glier, which was later converted for standardization purposes; 11 January 1875 – 23 June 1956), was a composer in the Russian Empire and Soviet Union, of German and Polish descent. Praeludium and Scherzo for double bass and piano, Op. 32. 11 Pieces for Different Instruments and piano, Op.

The String Quartet in B minor, Op. 11 was written in 1935–36 by Samuel Barber. Barber arranged the middle movement for string orchestra as his well-known Adagio for Strings in 1936. Barber continued to revise the piece, particularly the finale, until 1943. Molto allegro e appassionato. Molto allegro (come prima).

Arguably the greatest quartet cycle since Beethoven's, Dmitri Shostakovich's string quartets abound in psychological subtlety and emotional range. Performer: Borodin Quartet, Sviatoslav Richter. These performances by the Borodins will set a shadow over all others once you have heard them play this music. Also, the Quintet for Piano, op 57, featuring Sviatoslav Richter, played live at the Moskow Conservatory, where Shostakovich and the Beethoven Quartet premiered the piece together in 1940, is no less than spectacular, and authoritative to say the least! You will love this GREAT set, and I would urge anyone to get a copy before it has "gone away again"!
