Johannes Bobrowski (originally Johannes Konrad Bernhard Bobrowski; April 9, 1917 – September 2, 1965) was a German lyric poet, narrative writer, adaptor and essayist. Bobrowski was born on 9 April 1917 in Tilsit in East Prussia. In 1925, he moved first to Rastenburg, then in 1928 on to Königsberg, where he attended the Gymnasium. One of his teachers was Ernst Wiechert. In 1937, he started a degree in art history in Berlin.

He was a lance corporal for the entire Second World War in Poland, France and the Soviet Union. In 1943 he married Johanna Buddrus. From 1945-1949 Bobrowski was imprisoned by the Soviet Union, where he spent time.

Johannes Bobrowski belonged to that generation of East German poets who matured late artistically, since their creative development was interrupted by the events of World War II and the founding of a new state. When Bobrowski finally published his first slender volumes in the early 1960’s, they caused a great deal of excitement in both East and West Germany, for he was recognized as a major talent. His thematic concerns were new and provocative, and his unique style, based in part on classical German modes yet stripped to the bare linguistic essentials, was rich in metaphor and allegory. Johannes Bobrowski wurde 1917 als Sohn eines Eisenbahnbeamten in Tilsit geboren. Nach dem Abitur in Königsberg studierte er Kunstgeschichte in Berlin, wurde jedoch 1939 einberufen. Im Rußlandfeldzug entstanden seine ersten Gedichte. Erst 1949 kehrte er aus der sowjetischen nach Ostberlin zurück, wo er als Lektor arbeitete, zunächst im Altberliner Verlag Lucie Groszer, ab 1959 im Union Verlag. Seine ersten Gedichte erschienen einzeln ab 1955. 1961 - ein Jahr nach seinem ersten Auftritt in Westdeutschland auf Einladung der Gruppe 47 - folgte der erste Band Sarmatische Zeit. Seit Mitte der sechziger Jahre veröffentlichte er auch Prosa. Bobrowski starb 1965 in Berlin.
