Filles de Kilimanjaro (French for Girls of Kilimanjaro) is a studio album by American jazz trumpeter Miles Davis. It was recorded in June and September 1968, and released on Columbia Records. It was released in the United Kingdom by the company's subsidiary Columbia (CBS) in 1968 and in the United States during February of 1969. The album is a transitional work for Davis, who was shifting stylistically from acoustic recordings with his second "great" quintet to his "electric" period
Since it's billed as "Directions in Music by Miles Davis," it should come as little surprise that Filles de Kilimanjaro is the beginning of a new phase for Miles, the place that he begins to dive headfirst into jazz-rock fusion.

Filles De Kilimanjaro February 5, 1969. A photo of 23-year-old Betty Mabry, the future Mrs. Davis, appears on the cover. This young woman, who was at the center of the hip black scene, introduced Sly Stone and Jimi Hendrix to Miles and taught him how to dress in something other than a tailored suit. The the turning point signaled in Miles In The Sky- continued to compose almost all the pieces in his repertory. Gil Evans, however, had returned to the studio after Miles In The Sky and added some ideas of his own: for example, he signed the reprise of Petits Machins, renaming it Eleven

Filles De Kilimanjaro, although under the Miles Davis name, puts Miles Davis in a much more secondary role. Tony Williams stands out as the best musician on the album, seemingly knowing Miles Davis and his tendencies so well that he finishes all his phrases for him. History says a lot of tension creeped up between Miles and Williams, maybe because of this reason. For all jazz enthusiasts and jazz drummers especially, Filles de Kilimanjaro is a fantastic album and a lesser-known Miles album that definitely deserves more recognition and attention.
Filles de Kilimanjaro" is very much a transitional release by Miles Davis, standing between 1968's Nefertiti, the last word in superbly refined post-bop, and 1969's In a Silent Way, the first coherent fusion achievement. His lineup changed in the course of recording. The first session had his traditional quintet companions Wayne Shorter on saxophone, Herbie Hancock on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Tony Williams on drums. Nonetheless, things do tend to meander a bit, and I sense a constant uncertainly in the playing on most of the tracks. Ron Carter's bass on "Tout de suite" establishes the sort of mood found (with a very different lineup) on "In a Silent Way", but after a few minutes it seems like Davis and Shorter are no longer confident. Similar moments can be found in most of the remaining tracks.
